Franka Abrahamsen

Franka returns to Vivaldi for one night.
She created quite a sensation on her North American tour last year,

On that tour, her Nordic sound mingled English lyrics and
American folk-blues-country music, made her an instant hit.

A Super Weekend
First, Kristin then Sarah & Claire
perform to a packed, not- even- standing- room-only audiences.

Friday Feb 11, 2005 - Kristin's Performance
Kristin's fans who have come to most of her sets at Vivaldi - over 170 so far since 2003 - could easily rate tonight's performance as one of her best. Lately, her singing has been so consistently superb that it would be hard to single out any one as better than the other. However, all agree that her new songs are a delightful addition to her repertoire.

Those present at Vivaldi performances share a sense of witnessing a historic happening; a rare opportunity of being there at the birth of a star at a venue that exudes the warmth and the authenticity of a genuine Greenwich Village hangout for artists and their fans.

Saturday Feb 12, 2005 - Sarah's & Claire's Performance
When Sarah Bowman's first came to Vivaldi, it seemed that she was determined to remain unnoticed; quietly burying herself in cello playing as an accompanist to many of the very talented featured artists at Vivaldi. She almost succeeded until one evening she put her cello aside and started to sing. The first notes out of her mouth got the attention of Vivaldi's owner, Ishrat Ansari, who was amazed that Sarah did not sing as much and as often, commensurate with her talents. He immediately gave her a night of her own and offered her residency at Vivaldi.

The rest is history- history in the making.

On Saturday, accompanied by her very talented twin sister Claire, Sarah gave intimations of great things to come, as The Bowman Twins sang before a standing-room-only audience.

The Bowmans' guests for the evening were:
 Kevin Waite
 Alex Lowry
Miki Huber
 the Creaky Boards

Jessie Murphy donates proceeds from her show to
 Tsunami Relief

It was a full house for Singer/Songwriter Jessie Murphy's Vivaldi debut. Her gesture of donating all the proceeds from her show to Tsunami relief efforts was spectacularly successful.
Given the size of venue, the sum raised demonstrated the enormous generosity of Jessie's fans and the regulars at Vivaldi. It was handed over to Jessie's friend Dr. Anushri Wagner of the non-for-profit-organization, Prasad (prasad.org). Dr. Anushri Wagner had just returned from a trip to Sri Lanka and was going back there in a couple of weeks.

Two Grammy Fetching Performances by Kristin Hoffmann

In the 22 year history of Caffe Vivaldi, If there ever were two events that could fetch a Grammy,
they had to be the Friday January 14 and Saturday January 15, 2005 performances.

Kristin Hoffmann's first two performances of 2005, were superb to say the least. They qualify as first two nominees for any grand prize.  At these events, she enthralled her fans once again with stellar performances.
Kristin has performed more than 200 sets at Caffe Vivaldi from the time she started her residency there in April 2003. After listening to her for the first time, this is what Ishrat Ansari, the owner of the club,  wrote in his introduction to Kristin Hoffmann:

"Kristin uses her classically trained voice and piano playing to express
her lyrics through the rock genre so effectively that you as a listener
became a part of her performance. The joys, laments and longings
in her songs become your own as she takes you to an incredible
music journey."
-Ishrat Ansari, April 2003.

During most of 2003 & 2004 these word expressed not only the sentiments of the writer but also of her ever growing fan base.

Kristin is busy recording her first album for Interscope. From the reports we are getting, all is going extremely well with the recording, scheduled for release in June/July this year.

When is Kristin playing again at Vivaldi?  Watch for an announcement here.

Brad Mehldau
“The most acclaimed pianist of this generation"-Nate Chinen
(An Interview at Caffe Vivaldi)

Brad Mehldau: Anything Goes
by Nate Chinen
An Excerpt from Jazz Times, the January/February 2005 issue

My first real conversation with Brad Mehldau took place on an autumn evening at a coffeehouse in New York's Greenwich Village. Caffe Vivaldi exudes an old-world European languor-a small irony, since it was opened in the '80s by an industrious emigre from Pakistan. A weathered bench runs along one wall; the wall opposite, cluttered with somber black-and-white portraits of classical composers, is recognizable from films by Al Pacino and Woody Allen. For the past decade or so, the cafe has featured live music nightly: jazz, classical or folk, depending on the night. Walking in, Mehldau could have passed for one of the up-and-comers on the calendar, although he paid no heed to the piano in the corner or the hard bop piped into the room.

If Mehldau had ever actually played Caffe Vivaldi, he didn't mention it. But it's certainly possible, given that he came of age, professionally speaking, in the neighborhood. New School University, his undergraduate alma mater, is fewer than 10 blocks north. Smalls, the grottolike club that served as an incubator for the pianist and his peers, used to be a three-minute walk away. The Village Vanguard, more closely associated with Mehldau's career than any other spot in the world, is a straight shot up Seventh Avenue.

I had assumed that Mehldau chose the cafe for its proximity to the Vanguard, where he was halfway through a weeklong run with a new quartet. But as he pocketed his black-rimmed glasses and poured steamed milk into his coffee, it occurred to me that the setting was more than merely convenient. Blending propriety with comfort and high culture with egalitarian accessibility, Caffe Vivaldi echoes Mehldau's aesthetic ideals. I doubt that he'd given this a thought before our meeting. But it was clear that the cafe, like the Vanguard, was a place where he felt at home.

Brad Mehldau is the most highly acclaimed jazz artist to have emerged in the last decade. It was exactly 10 years ago that he flew onto the mainstream radar as a member of the Joshua Redman Quartet. The following year saw Mehldau's major-label debut, and the formation of his trio with drummer Jorge Rossy and bassist Larry Grenadier. This group, which released its eighth album in 2004, brought a subtle but perceptible new wrinkle to the fabric of piano trio tradition-a personal alchemy of floating rhythmic sensibilities, capricious virtuosity and courtly lyricism. Partly because Mehldau has only rarely worked in other settings, the band is nearly synonymous with
his artistic self.

Young & Classical
He is not a jazz or pop musician, yet young people are flocking to Vivaldito
listen to Classical Pianist Bjorn Brandt

Bjorn Brandt
Classical Pianist Bjorn Brandt, who is doing a residency at Vivaldi, is a rare phenomenon. When he plays, young people flock to Vivaldi in droves. There are no ads or posters to announce his performances; just word of mouth. In his 30 years of living in New York, this writer has never witnessed such serious interest of young New Yorkers in Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Rachmaninoff and others. Bjorn's flair and effortless playing makes the music of old masters sound engagingly refreshing.

Devon Copely and Alex Wong of the Animators returned to Caffe Vivaldi after a long absence. The fans came in droves to listen to their favorite band and their guests. The Animators were introduced to us in 2003, by another Caffe Vivaldi favorite, Yael, when they appeared as guests on one of her shows. (Yael returns to Vivaldi in January. See below). The rest is history. Today, The Animators star quality and large fan base makes them one of the hottest band in town.

The Animators' guests, for the Caffe Vivaldi performance, included Mariana Bell, Katy Pfaffl, Mike Viola, Jonathan Spottiswoode, Rosi Golan and Kristin Hoffmann- who wowed the audience with her three beautiful songs.

The show was a big success with another vintage Animators performance. The audience loved it.

The Animators are on a West Coast tour and will be back at Vivaldi at the end of February or early March. We will keep you posted.
